What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing modalities in the world. Your treatment is not necessarily based on your specific condition but instead, on your unique symptoms and medical history, which helps the acupuncturist to evaluate the root cause of your condition. The unique observations used in Chinese medicine, which include a thorough consultation and various diagnostic techniques, means that we are able to simultaneously focus on the cause of the condition as well as the most recent presentations, to systematically get you back to feeling well. By administering holistic and patient centered treatments, clients frequently experience additional and unexpected benefits.

What to expect

After a full and confidential consultation, I include subtle diagnostic techniques to decide on your treatment. Very fine needles are inserted into various and specific acupuncture points. Depending on the aim of the treatment, these points will be chosen in order to enhance the vital energy inside your body. Communication is encouraged throughout the treatment. Once the needles are in, you will able to rest for 20-30 minutes. During this time, other treatments like moxa or tuina may be given when necessary to enhance the treatment.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is another ancient form of Chinese Medicine, which has recently been getting a lot of attention due to its use by many top athletes. In this practice, glass cups are placed on certain parts of the body and a suction is created which brings a concentration of blood and qi to the area. The cups can be moved along the body to give the sensation and benefits similar to a deep tissue massage, or they will be left on specific points for a few minutes. Some bruising may occur due to the concentration of blood flow. Benefits include the relief of stiffness, the enhanced healing of overworked muscles, and a reduction of inflammation and pain.

Moxa

Moxa therapy is a form of heat therapy which has been used for thousands of years alongside Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. It can be used on its own or to enhance the healing benefits of an acupuncture treatment. In moxa therapy, a herb called Mugwort is lit in order to create a natural and soothing form of heat that can be used in the treatment of pain, stiffness and conditions caused by imbalances in the body such as deficiencies, the stagnation of qi and blood, and the stagnation of cold. Moxa is also frequently cited as effective in turning breach babies. This is administered by using moxa on specific acupuncture points known to have this effect. It also feels great! Smokeless moxa is also available for people who have asthma, hay fever or a sensitive chest.

Conditions

Along with treating general imbalances in the body, acupuncture can be used to benefit the following conditions:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Digestive disorders, including IBS, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease.
  • Pain management, both chronic and acute
  • Musculoskeletal issues, including sports injuries and the symptoms of arthritis.
  • Menstrual irregularities and disorders
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Preconception
  • Infertility
  • Nausea, discomfort and morning sickness associated with pregnancy
  • Labor preparation and induction
  • Postpartum care
Before a treatment

Many acupuncture points are found on the lower legs and arms so it is helpful to wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to these areas. It is a good idea to have a light meal 1-2 hours before your treatment. Staying hydrated is also helpful, both before and after your treatment!

Be sure to let the practitioner know if it is your first treatment and discuss any concerns. Toni is happy to discuss the process with you so that you feel comfortable and well informed.

After the treatment you may have extra energy or feel like you need to rest. This response is usually because your body is no longer functioning on automatic and will let you know what it needs. If you feel tired it is a good idea to not overexert yourself after the treatment and always stay hydrated!
